Prime Minister Mark Carney s government announced a major pay increase for military members, a move that pushes Canada closer to meeting its NATO defense spending target.

The full package will cost the federal government about C$2 billion ($1.5 billion) annually, according to defense officials. The raises range from 8% to 20% for various ranks of soldiers, and there is also more money for recruitment incentives and training support.
